Making way for Mild in May
This May, we’re proud to support CAMRA’s Mild Month campaign. It’s a great nationwide initiative to celebrate and revive the classic British beer style known as mild.
Once a staple in pubs across the land, mild has, unfortunately, faced a steady decline. But thanks to CAMRA and the passionate efforts of independent brewers and pubs, mild is making a comeback.
And rightly so.
What is Mild?
Let’s start with the basics.
Mild is a traditional beer style that rose to prominence in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
Yep. It’s been around for a while!
Unlike the aggressively hopped porters of that period, milds offered a slightly sweeter, more rounded drinking experience.
Your typical modern Milds will tend to be lower in alcohol. Usually between 3% and 3.5% ABV. That said, many brewers are starting to reintroduce stronger versions that reflect the drink’s original form.
Milds are dark in colour and are usually brewed with roasted malts or barley.
You can expect a rich, malty aroma with notes of chocolate, coffee, caramel, and dark fruit. And, because of it’s smooth finish and subtle bitterness, it’s nicely balanced and easy to drink.
That’s made your ears prick up, hasn’t it?
What’s happening at Caldmore Taverns?
We’ll be featuring a rotating selection of milds across some of our pubs. Here’s where you can raise a glass and join the celebration…

The Throstle's Nest are featuring milds from four different breweries
The Throstle’s Nest, Congleton
Michael and his team at The Throstle’s Nest are going all-in for Mild Month. They’ll have four moorish milds throughout the month.
Better yet, each is included in their Early Bird offer! From Monday to Friday until 4:00pm you can enjoy a Mild for just £3.00 a pint.
Here’s what’s pouring:
Ruby Mild – 4.8% (RedWillow Brewery)
A smooth ruby mild with a rich body and notes of sweet dried fruit, hazelnut, and light caramel.
Merry Mild – 3.6% (Riverhead Brewery)
Silky and dark with a deep mahogany colour and a soft tan head. A classic mild ale with a smooth finish.
Monsal Mild – 4.5% (Buxton Brewery)
Inspired by Derbyshire’s Monsal Dale, this rich mild blends chocolate maltiness with a gentle bitterness.
The Champion – 3.2% (Hobsons Brewery)
A proper British mild with aromas of roasted caramel, chocolate, and coffee. Smooth and packed with flavour.
Michael certainly has a quality line-up and a great offer to match. Hence, The Throstle’s Nest is a must-visit this May for anyone exploring the mild revival.

At The Fountain, each mild will have its place in the limelight
The Fountain Inn, Leek
Over in Leek, Guy and his team at The Fountain Inn couldn’t wait for May to start. They were too excited to get pouring!
The Fountain will be showcasing one mild at a time, giving each brew its moment in the spotlight.
First up:
Class Mild – 4.6% (Beartown Brewery)
This is a smooth, dark, and flavour-packed beer from Beartown Brewery.
Full-bodied. Comforting. The perfect way to kick off the campaign. And, at just £3.40 a pint it’s hard to resist the temptation.
More milds will be rotating as the month goes on, so there’s always something new to try.

Catch each one while it lasts at The Royal Oak – when it's gone, it's gone!

Monsal Mild – 4.5% (Buxton Brewery)
A rich, chocolatey mild inspired by the beauty of Monsal Dale, balanced with a touch of bitterness.
These beauties won’t be around for long. Once one’s finished, the next goes straight on – so grab them while you can.

Supporting a great campaign
CAMRA’s Mild Month campaign is about more than just enjoying a pint. It’s about preserving a unique piece of British brewing heritage.
By encouraging pubs to put mild back on the bar and giving it the attention it deserves, CAMRA and participating pubs are keeping this historic beer style alive for future generations.
We’re proud to show our support at Caldmore Taverns. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the rich, smooth, and satisfying world of mild.
